About The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)
Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) programmes was established by the UN to promote the sustainable development goals (SDGs). It encourages the creation of local, national and regional networks which will promote problem-solving approaches and practical solutions for the pressing challenges of sustainable development.
The immediate task of SDSN amidst its aim is to sensitize RSUST staff and students about sustainable development. Its role is to create awareness among decision-makers and significantly, potential financiers. SDSN, in recognition of its need to fund its own activities, has come up with a strategic plan (2016-20) and funding Strategy, including promotional web link, which shall be pursued rigorously in the first and future years.
The widely accepted definition of sustainable development is that formulated by the Brundtland Commission in 1987 as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"
The initiative for Nigeria, spearheaded by the Nigeria Sustainable Development Solutions Network (NSDSN), launched originally in May 2013, has focused on basing the SDS network on Universities in the belief that these are knowledge centres that can effectively and efficiently mobilize action to promote the new SDGs. Each University in Nigeria has been asked to appoint a Liaison Officer, a Sustainable Development Desk Officer (SDDO) to interface with the NSDSN, to participate in its activities, and to promote local sustainable projects. RSUST has appointed Dr David N. Ogbonna to this role.
One of Dr Ogbonna’s first actions has been to arrange discussions with interested parties about next steps, the main outcome of which has been a decision to establish a Centre for Sustainable Development Solution Network (SDSN) at RSUST in order to ensure that there is an enabling organizational environment that helps the University’s sustainable development initiatives to flourish.
The objective of setting up the SDSN programme is for empowerment and social inclusion, to enable the Rivers State citizenry have equal access to the benefits of sustainable development. To enhance transparency and interdisciplinary approach to sustainable development, the SDSN programme through rigorous monitoring and evaluation will promote systematic appraisal of performance and progress. Hence, the value for money will be obtained for projects which will be beneficial to the Rivers State citizen.
